According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, 33-year-old Lorenzo Najera from Midland was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident near the FM 1788 and CR-140 intersection at approximately 6:30 p.m.
Three vehicles were involved in the accident: a 2020 Chevrolet 2500, a 2024 Peterbilt 567 towing a trailer, and a 2018 Ford F-150. At the time of the incident, Najera was driving the Ford F-150. Several occupants of the vehicles received treatment for minor injuries at Midland Memorial Hospital after being transported there by ambulance.
According to the initial investigation, 32-year-old Brenda Guerrero, a passenger in the Ford, was treated for minor injuries. Additionally, a three-year-old girl and a ten-year-old girl were also treated for minor injuries at Midland Memorial. The children were reportedly in the Ford F-150 with Najera at the time of the accident.
Preliminary traffic report information indicates that the 2018 Ford F-150 was traveling southbound on FM-1788. A hitched trailer was also in front of the 2018 Ford F-150 as it traveled southbound on FM-1788. The third vehicle, a 2020 Chevrolet 2500, was traveling north on FM-1788.
The investigation revealed that the 2018 Ford failed to safely pass the Peterbilt to the right and struck it on the left side. After that, the driver of the Ford lost control and struck the 2020 Chevrolet 2500 as it entered oncoming traffic. The 2018 Ford then burned out and went off the road.
After the incident, the driver of the Ford, Najera, was pronounced dead by the Midland County Death Investigator. The driver of the Peterbilt, 34-year-old Jared Todd from Gulf Shores, Alabama, reportedly escaped the incident unscathed. Records indicate that 64-year-old Juan Diaz Veloz, a Midland resident, was operating the 2020 Chevrolet and was taken to Midland Memorial Hospital with only minor injuries.
The cause of the accident remains unclear and is currently under investigation. No further details are available at this time. The Texas Department of Public Safety is urging anyone with information or witnesses to the accident to come forward and assist the authorities.
