Obituary, Death Haley Covarrubias, 35, Killed by Estranged Husband, 32, in Tragic Murder-Suicide; 3-year-old Son Left Unharmed
A shocking murder-suicide occurred in Joliet, Illinois, on Saturday morning, leaving a community in mourning. According to Joliet police spokesperson Dwayne English, a 35-year-old woman, identified as Haley Covarrubias, was stabbed to death by her estranged husband, who then took his own life.
The incident unfolded around 11 a.m. on Saturday when Joliet police responded to a stabbing call at the 3400 block of Pandola Avenue, near the intersection of Timberline Drive. Upon arrival, officers found Covarrubias lying in the roadway with multiple stab wounds to her chest. A short distance away, they discovered her estranged husband, 32, unconscious in a neighboring driveway, also suffering from multiple chest stab wounds.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple was in the process of getting a divorce. On the day of the incident, the husband arrived at Covarrubias’ residence, leading to a fight that prompted her to flee. Armed with a kitchen knife, the husband pursued Covarrubias, catching up to her on the street near her house, where he repeatedly stabbed her in the chest. Witnesses reported seeing the husband stab himself multiple times after attacking Covarrubias.
The Joliet Fire Department transported both individuals to Ascension St. Joseph Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead. A 3-year-old boy, the couple’s son, was found unharmed inside the residence. The Department of Children and Family Services was notified, as required by Illinois law, and the child was taken into protective custody.
The Will County Coroner’s Office will conduct autopsies to determine the official cause and manner of death. Funeral arrangements for Covarrubias and her estranged husband will be announced by the family at a later date.
