Jacob Derbin, a 23-year-old police officer with the Euclid Police Department, was shot and killed in the line of duty on Saturday night while responding to a disturbance call. The suspect, identified as Deshawn Vaughn, 24, was found dead after a standoff with police.

According to the Euclid Police Department, officers were dispatched to a home just before 10 p.m. on Saturday after a reported disturbance. The complainant told police that her child’s father, Deshawn Vaughn, had threatened to harm her and her mother. When officers arrived at the scene, the woman stated that Vaughn was on foot and possibly nearby.

As officers checked the backyard, Vaughn opened fire on them, ambushing Officer Jacob Derbin and shooting him. Officers returned fire, and Vaughn ran. Derbin was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

A massive manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies ensued, with residents reporting hearing 12 gunshots. The Ohio Attorney General’s office released photos of Vaughn and his vehicle, and he was later found in an apartment building by Northeast Ohio officers.

Vaughn died during a standoff at the apartment, and the cause of death is unknown. The standoff is being investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Officer Jacob Derbin was in his first year with the Euclid Police Department, having been sworn in on July 24, 2023. He was described by Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer as “an amazing human being” with “a great heart” and “an incredible smile.”
