Obituary, Death: Jacob Derbin, 23, Ohio Police Officer Killed in Ambush Shooting, Suspect Found Dead

Jacob Derbin, a 23-year-old police officer from Ohio, tragically lost his life in an ambush shooting on Saturday night in Euclid, Ohio. The Euclid Police Department received a call to investigate a disturbance at a residence, and Officer Derbin was ambushed by a gunman while investigating. He was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, was found dead in a Shaker Heights residence on Sunday afternoon. The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.

Officer Derbin’s death is a tragic loss for the Euclid Police Department and the community. He was a dedicated and brave officer who was committed to serving and protecting his community. His death is a reminder of the risks and sacrifices that law enforcement officers make every day to keep us safe.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost expressed his condolences and outrage over the senseless killing of Officer Derbin. “Our officers’ blood is used to sign the pledge of protection. The murderer who ambushed Officer Derbin will be found and will receive the full measure of justice.”

Officer Derbin’s death comes during Police Memorial Week, a time when we honor and remember fallen officers. His death is a bitter irony, as it occurred on Mother’s Day, and his mother has lost her child in the line of duty.

The incident is a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers every day. At least 58 police officers have died in the line of duty this year, with 22 of them being shot and killed. The Officer Down Memorial Page reports that this number is almost 40% lower than last year’s total of 224 officers who died in the line of duty.

Officer Derbin’s death is a loss for the entire community, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The investigation is ongoing, and the community comes together to support the Euclid Police Department and Officer Derbin’s family during this difficult time.
