Kathleen Marie “Kathy” Shaw, 73, of Washington, PA, Passed Away on May 12, 2024; Obituary, Death

Kathleen Marie “Kathy” Shaw, a beloved resident of Washington, Pennsylvania, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at Shadyside Hospital following a brief illness. She was 73 years old.

Kathy was born in Windber, Somerset County, on March 6, 1951, to the late Frank and Anna Mae Wadsworth Giblock. She graduated from Ebensburg’s Bishop Carroll High School in 1969 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education from Clarion University in 1972.

Throughout her career, Kathy dedicated herself to teaching, serving as a language arts instructor at St. Hilary Parochial School and a French teacher at Dubois Area School District. Her passion for education and her love for her students were evident in everything she did.

Kathy was an active member of St. James Parish in Washington, where she served as a lector, choir member, extraordinary minister, and volunteer in various ministries. Her commitment to her faith and her community was inspiring to all who knew her.

In addition to her teaching and religious pursuits, Kathy was a devoted leader in the Girl Scouts of Southwestern Pennsylvania. She led summer day camps, Thinking Days, and training programs for many years, inspiring countless young girls and women. She also served as a troop leader and was a driving force behind the Green Angels team, which raised funds for cancer research at the Relay For Life every May.

Kathy’s love for music, floral gardening, crocheting, and luncheon dates with close friends brought her great joy. But her greatest love was her family, including her husband, Don Shaw, whom she married on June 8, 1974, in Lilly, and her twin daughters, Kelly Shaw and Kristen Shaw.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Don; her daughters, Kelly and Kristen; her brother, Thomas (Marcia) Giblock of Gillette, Wyoming; her sister-in-law, Debbie (Carl) Shaw; her brother-in-law, James Shaw; and her nieces and nephews, Shannon (Gretchen) Giblock, Gavin Giblock, Jamie (Tim) Deimling, Alyssa, Jacob, and Hailey Deimling, Matt (Jan) Giblock, and Nancy Shaw.

Friends will be received on Thursday, May 16, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Dale D. DeAngelo Funeral Home, 1290 Jefferson Avenue, Washington. Departing prayers will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 17, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Washington.

Kathy’s passing leaves a great void in the lives of all who knew and loved her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to her family, faith, and community will be remembered and cherished forever. May she rest in peace.
