A North Castle man has been charged with aggravated attempted murder of a police officer after attacking an officer at his residence on May 20. Joseph Spennato, 38, of 14 Hallock Place, Armonk, was charged on Tuesday night at Westchester Medical Center, where he has been admitted since the incident.

According to Westchester County Police, Spennato attempted to stab an officer with a five-inch folding knife as they tried to place him under custody. Sgt. William McClure and Police Officer Chris Costa of North Castle Police were the first to respond to the scene, arriving at Spennato’s residence just before 12:30 p.m. to assist a 78-year-old woman who required medical attention.

Upon entering the residence, the officers encountered Spennato and discovered that there were two bench warrants for his arrest. When they attempted to take him into custody, he allegedly grabbed a knife and attempted to stab McClure, who was wearing a ballistic vest, several times in the back.

Police Officer Chris Costa then shot Spennato twice, and he was taken into custody and transported to Westchester Medical Center for treatment. Westchester County Police were requested to take over the investigation, which was conducted in conjunction with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.

Spennato was arraigned and ordered held without bail, and he will be remanded to Westchester County Jail upon his release from the hospital.
