Earlier today, a dramatic and tense situation unfolded in Rockford, Tennessee, as the Blount County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of shots fired on Old Knoxville Highway near Jacob Springs Road. The incident began when deputies were dispatched to a residence on Jacob Springs Boulevard for a welfare check and possible domestic situation. This seemingly routine call quickly escalated into a dangerous confrontation, resulting in the injury of two deputies and the arrest of a suspect.

The deputies involved, Deputy Corbin Smith and Deputy Edward Walker, arrived at the scene at approximately 3:19 pm. Upon their arrival, the suspect, identified as 59-year-old Ronald Reed Millsaps, emerged from the garage. Initially, deputies lost sight of Millsaps, but he reappeared moments later, engaging the officers with gunfire. This sudden attack forced Deputies Smith and Walker to seek cover behind their vehicles, but despite their efforts, both deputies were struck by gunfire.

The injured deputies were swiftly transported to U.T. Medical Center, where they received treatment for their injuries. Fortunately, both deputies are reported to be in stable condition, a relief to their families, colleagues, and the community. The rapid response and medical attention they received likely played a crucial role in stabilizing their condition.

As the situation unfolded, responding deputies returned fire at Millsaps, who retreated into the residence. The incident prompted a significant response from the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, including their SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team, and additional support from multiple law enforcement agencies in the area. The coordinated efforts of these units were critical in managing the dangerous and volatile situation.

Amidst the exchange of gunfire, deputies faced the challenge of rescuing their injured colleagues. Despite the risk, they managed to extricate Deputy Smith and Deputy Walker from the scene while under fire. This act of bravery and quick thinking underscored the dedication and courage of the law enforcement officers involved.

The situation took another critical turn when it was revealed that Millsaps had threatened to shoot an elderly female victim inside the home. This information heightened the urgency of the situation, prompting the SWAT team to take decisive action. Members of the SWAT team entered the residence and successfully apprehended Millsaps without further incident shortly after 5 pm. Millsaps was taken into custody and transported to the Blount County Correctional Facility, where he now faces several felony charges.

The elderly woman inside the residence, fortunately, was not injured during the incident. However, as a precaution, she was transported by AMR Ambulance Service to an area hospital for observation. Her well-being remains a priority, and the community is relieved that she was not harmed during the chaotic events.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has taken over the investigation of the incident. This external review is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings and incidents of this nature. The TBI’s involvement ensures a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the actions of all parties involved.

The community of Rockford, and indeed the broader Blount County area, is reeling from the shock of today’s events. The quick and coordinated response of the Sheriff’s Office and supporting law enforcement agencies undoubtedly prevented further harm and ensured the apprehension of the suspect. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the injured deputies, ensuring justice is served, and providing reassurance to the community.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily as they protect and serve their communities. Deputy Smith and Deputy Walker’s bravery and resilience are commendable, and their recovery is being closely monitored and supported by their colleagues and community members.

As more details emerge from the ongoing investigation, the community will undoubtedly come together to support those affected and reinforce their commitment to safety and security. The swift resolution of today’s crisis highlights the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement efforts and the bravery of the individuals involved.
