In a somber turn of events, the firefighting community mourns the loss of one of its bravest members, former Oconee Emergency Services Captain Shon Hamilton from Greenville, South Carolina.

The Gantt District Fire Department took to Facebook to share the heart-wrenching news of the untimely passing of one of their own, the bravest and most knowledgeable firefighter, Shon Hamilton.

Gantt District Fire Department shared the following message on Facebook:

It is with deep sorrow that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our brave brothers, Shon Hamilton. During his time at Gantt, he served our community with unwavering dedication and courage. Our thoughts and prayers are with Shon’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. The impact of his service will forever be remembered, and he will remain an enduring symbol of bravery within our fire department family.

In a poignant post, the department expressed the profound grief that has gripped the firefighting community in the wake of this loss. Shon Hamilton, who had served as a beacon of courage and expertise, leaves behind a legacy that resonates not only within the department but also in the hearts of those he worked alongside.

Who was Shon Hamilton?

As the Captain of Oconee Emergency Services, he spent numerous years in the upstate and specifically here in Oconee, leaving an indelible mark on both the local community and the broader firefighting landscape.

Venturing beyond the bounds of conventional firefighting roles, Shon took on the pivotal position of Coordinator for the SC Urban Search and Rescue Task Force One and SCHART (Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team). This transition showcased not only his leadership acumen but also his readiness to tackle diverse challenges in emergency response. Serving as the project coordinator for over six years, he played a central role in coordinating and responding to significant events and natural disasters across the state.

Shon Hamilton’s impact extended far beyond administrative roles; he was recognized as one of the nicest and most knowledgeable individuals in the business. His retirement last August marked the culmination of a career marked by tireless efforts and achievements. Under his guidance, the SC Urban Search and Rescue Task Force One and the SC Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team executed numerous rescues, saving lives in the face of adversity.

Prior to his statewide leadership roles, Shon served with distinction as a Captain in Oconee County and dedicated his time to volunteering at the Gantt District Fire Department. Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department wrote: “Tonight, Oconee County mourns the loss of former Oconee Emergency Services Captain Shon Hamilton. Shon spent many years in the fire service in the upstate and here in Oconee before leaving to take the coordinator role for the SC Urban Search and Rescue Task Force One, as well as the SCHART (Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team). He was a friend to many. Through his efforts, many lives saved due to his leadership and guidance. We pray for his family during this difficult time. RIP Shon.”

Firefighter Mark Bryant wrote: “RIP Shon. Prayers to Stacie, their children, and the family.Tonight the Townville VFD mourns the loss of former member Shon Hamilton. If you have been around the fire service in South Carolina for any amount of time, chances are you knew Shon. He was one of the nicest and knowledgable guys in the business. Before retiring last August, he was the project coordinator of the SC- Urban Search and Rescue Task Force One, as well as the SC Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team.

He led this team for over 6 years and played a crucial role statewide in many significant events and natural disasters. Many rescues were performed and lives saved due to his leadership, guidance and efforts. Prior to that role, he served in Oconee County as a Captain, as well as volunteered at our department. He also spent many years with other departments in the area. We thank you for your many years of contributions to your fellow man, and serving the citizens of South Carolina. RIP Brother.”

Howe Springs Fire Rescue Chief William Dillon wrote: “This one hurts more than I could have evered imagined. This man was my brother from the day we met. Not one time did he see me that he not give me a hug and let me know he was glad to see me. 

Shon Hamilton was one in a million. He pushed me all the time to do more and let me know that I was appreciated. I was blessed to have him as a friend. Alot of hearts are hurting in the SC Fire Service tonight. Hug your brothers and sisters tight when you get the chance. He sure did. Rest easy brother.”
