In the Woodland Hills neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, California, close to the junction of Ventura Boulevard and Winnetka Avenue, is a public high school called William Howard Taft Charter High School. The Los Angeles Unified School District encompasses it. Beginning with the 2013–2014 academic year, the school was granted associated charter status. The school was founded in 1960 and given its name in remembrance of previous US President William Howard Taft. It was a member of the Los Angeles City High School District until 1961, at which point it joined LAUSD. In 2013, Taft High School underwent a transformation and became a charter school for the 2013–2014 school year.
On Monday, a group of around twelve kids watched a 17-year-old student at Reseda High School be tragically shot by a 15-year-old classmate. Authorities said that this is the second time in less than a month that a child has been shot and killed on a Los Angeles Unified School District campus. The incident happened only three weeks after the district introduced a ground-breaking program that uses metal detectors at random to search the second-largest school system in the nation for firearms.
Authorities said that during a late-morning food break in the school’s science building, Reseda High football player Robert Heard approached Michael Shean Ensley. The other kids watched as Heard fired a single shot that struck Ensley in the chest.
