When we received a text message from Thomas Battle early Saturday morning alerting me that Nelson had died yesterday evening at the age of 75, we wasn’t wholly surprised. we was notified that Nelson had died. we received a message on Friday evening alerting me that Nelson had left.

Mary Helen, Nelson’s wife, was taken from this world a little more than two months before her death by the sickness that eventually claimed her life. Mary Helen had died, while Nelson had been battling cancer for several years. Nelson had been battling the sickness for some years. Nelson was the head coach of the boys’ basketball team and an assistant coach of the football team at Bay City for 36 years. He was also the defensive coordinator for the football squad. His teams completed with a 745-357 record, including 16 district championships, five regional crowns, five state tournament appearances, two state finals, and the 1985 Class 4A state championship.
