Middletown, Rhode Island – The community is in mourning following the tragic discovery of the body of Portsmouth High School student Owen Cameron, who had been reported missing after leaving work on Saturday. The 17-year-old’s body was found late Wednesday morning near the Newport State Airport.
According to the Middletown Police Department, Owen’s body was discovered partially submerged in water. A joint search effort involving the Middletown, Newport, and Portsmouth police departments, as well as members of the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force, successfully located Cameron’s body at 11:17 a.m.
While the Rhode Island State Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an investigation into the cause of Owen’s death, no criminal activity is suspected at this time, as confirmed by the police.
Owen Cameron, described as a focused and determined young man, was a student at Portsmouth High School. Superintendent of Schools in Portsmouth, Thomas Kenworthy, issued a statement to the school community on Wednesday afternoon, expressing condolences and offering support. Kenworthy shared that Owen had aspirations of pursuing a career as an electrician.
In response to the tragic news, counseling support will be made available to students and staff in the district, with ongoing assistance provided in the weeks ahead.
“Our thoughts are with Owen’s family and friends, and we will be respecting their privacy during this difficult period,” stated Kenworthy in his announcement.
