A domestic altercation turned deadly with gunfire at a residence in east Birmingham. Joshua Hayes, aged 27, was identified as the victim by Birmingham police on Tuesday night.

Initial reports of shots fired in the 900 block of Navarro Lane prompted a response from Irondale police around 10:57 a.m. on Tuesday.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered Hayes deceased inside the residence.

Officers promptly established that the incident fell within Birmingham’s jurisdiction, prompting a response from Birmingham police and detectives.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald stated that investigations revealed a domestic altercation had occurred, escalating to the point where the victim sustained a gunshot wound.

A woman, believed to be in a dating relationship with the victim, was apprehended at the site.

She was transported to the police headquarters for questioning and subsequently placed under arrest at the Birmingham City Jail on a 48-hour hold on suspicion of murder.

Officer Fitzgerald acknowledged the swift response and effective actions taken by the Irondale police at the scene, which greatly aided their investigation.

Animal control responded to collect several cats and at least one dog found at the residence. Hayes’ death marks Birmingham’s 35th homicide this year, with three cases classified as justifiable and therefore not considered criminal.

Across Jefferson County, there have been a total of 44 homicides, including those within Birmingham.
