He continued in the United States Navy Reserve until 1962, when he was discharged with honor on the rank of Lieutenant Commander. The civilian life he led led him to a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he worked for a brief period of time as a member of the staff.
Between the years 1962 and 1995, Alan created a long-lasting and prosperous internal medicine practice in Phoenix, Arizona. During this time, he was honored with a number of professional accolades and awards. The Borden Undergraduate Research Award in Medicine from 1955, the Mayo Association A, and both of these awards are among them.
